Through the practice of akhaṇḍa mahāyoga, the yogin may not only realize his own personal self-realization, but then return with full compassion and bring this realization back into this world of suffering. Much like the Mahāyāna Buddhist ideal of the compassionate bodhisattva, who renounces his own personal nirvāṇa in order to help all beings achieve liberation, the integral guru vows to return out of selfless love in order to bring the liberating knowledge of the supreme Brahman into this world. He thus becomes the conduit through which universal grace floods into and permeates the universe. The supreme yogin aims to realize his own nature as Śiva—the supreme Self who lies within us all, who is imagined in mythological terms as the deity sleeping blissfully upon the cosmic ocean. But rather than simply enjoying the bliss of his identity with Paramaśiva, the yogin must then strive to awaken the supreme consciousness of the Self, thereby cutting the very root of cosmic delusion and causing all beings to wake up from the dream of the phenomenal universe:
